Black Oak Arkansas Ad

This is a little late for the Fourth of July, but we're going to post it any way...sometimes, scheduling does get a little tight on the blog!  Thanks to Barry Mac, here is an ad for Black Oak Arkansas' performance at, what sounds to be the J Bar H Arena in Camdenton, MO, in the Lake of The Ozarks.  Apparently, this is the rodeo arena since, I think, the 1950's.  back then, I read, Camdenton transformed itself into a full-fledged cowboy town.  It seems a lot of good times were had at the arena!

Five dollars got you an open-air performance of Black Oak Arkansas, The James Gang, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Brownsville Station.

You can't get even near a decent concert nowadays for five dollars....maybe into a local coffee shop with a new band....

  1. I helped with the stage and wiring for two weeks before the event, then worked security for the show--mainly just keeping people from climbing a scaffold holding speakers. Anyway, Quicksilver cancelled a week or two before the show. James Gang, Jo Jo Gunne, Brownsville Station and Black Oak Arkansas were the ones who performed.

  6. At 17, I was at this festival with some buddies and my cousin. Yes, it was a miserably hot day. The acts were great and the booze and drugs appeared to flow freely. Luckily, the Camdenton gendarmes confiscated our beer the night before and we were "stuck" drinking lemonade and root beer during the day's oppressive heat. A blessing in disguise. I was about to protest the advertising of Quicksilver Messenger Service until I saw all the post correcting it to Jo Jo Gunn. What I remember most was during changeover interludes between bands I got my first listen to the Dark Side Of The Moon album. It was both beautiful and surreal in that hot dusty setting. We sat on bleachers outside the inner corral fence basically looking across the stage from stage right. After dark when Black Oak began to play, we climbed the fence to stand in front of the stage. Really great memories. Can anyone tell me what the official name was for this festival because I just can't remember and only know a couple of people not in our immediate group who were actually there. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

  7. Outdoors in the Country was the name of the festival. If you go to the Beaker Street/Clyde Clifford Fans Facebook page, I posted a little video I made using the poster for the festival and the audio from this page. I can't see any way to post the wave file here.

  8. I went to this concert with a friend. We were 16 and drank all of our water in the first 2 hours. Hot as hell. Got sunburned badly. Face blistered. Ask old man at gas station what was happening and he said the hippies were having a poop contest over at the rodeo arena. We thought that was funny.

  9. I worked the gate and security on stage for Black Oak, We did not expect the crowd that showed up in Camdenton the night before. All the stores sold out of beer and people was making runs to Osage Beach and Lebanon for beer. But even with the extra people that showed up we had no problems except for the heat. My X father n law was the fire chief of Camdenton and him and his men walked the crowd and later told me that he had never met a bunch of nicer kids then he did the day of the concert. It ran a little long but we did the best that we could. The next week the city council of Camdenton held a meeting and past a bill that stated no more rock concerts inside the city limits of Camdenton.I is a concert to remember of good times and good music and great people. Just wish we could have a reunion concert... I can see it now, wheel chairs, walking sticks, oxygen tanks and depends............

  14. Mike Bair. September 1 2019 I worked at Lake Park Marina and campground. You couldn’t have squeezed another person in the campground. I heard several people holler anyone have any pot and a dozen people would come over wanting to sell them pot. The square in Camdenton was full of people sleeping on the courthouse lawn. That’s the first concert I went to. Wow what an experience

  15. I was there. I went to visit a buddy and he talked me in staying a few extra days to go to the concert. I liked it down there so I ended up moving to Camdenton in '75 and stayed there until '78.
